Love reading the works of our dearly departed? Like to dress up and strut your stuff? Then Dead Writers Night is the evening for you. Join us for a night of unspeakable horror as you bring your favorite dead writers to life. Come dressed as Hawthorne, Austin, Chekhov, Woolf…the author of your dreams, and bring a two minute sample of their writing to share. Participate in the Costume Parade and win a fabulous prize to be awarded by our panel of judges. And here’s the highlight: five Santa Cruz writers will use a Ouija board to contact a dead writer chosen by popular vote of those in attendance. Sliding scale donations. Students: $5-$20; General: $25-$50. All donations used to 1.) train volunteers working with students on their writing and 2.) publish student work. Student sliding scale available with valid ID.
Bring a pen and some paper and come participate in our all-levels, no-pressure, word-nerdy weekly poetry workshop. All workshops focus on generating new work (as opposed to the editing of established poems). Our workshops are led by rotating facilitators and include:
Kevin Devaney – Advancing Metaphor (10/6)
Sayv1 – Intro to Freestyle workshop (2nd Monday of every month)
Ragedy Andy (10/20)
Jasmine Schlafke aka Queen Jasmeen – Practical Magic in Writing (10/27 & 11/24)
It’s Santa Cruz’s Only Weekly Poetry Open Mic. All styles welcome, 10 person open mic, 5 person waitlist, please bring 4 minutes or less of work to share on the mic.
